Resource title and description in English Insects in Austria. Four out of five animal species in Austria are insects. Among other things, they provide pollination, pest control, the decomposition of organic substances and are the basis of nutrition for other animal species. The report provides an overview of species numbers, distribution and population trends in Austria as well as their importance for us humans. One focus is dedicated to the dramatic declines of insect populations worldwide and various endangerment factors. While in the past only demanding, specialised insect species were considered endangered, new findings suggest that common and widespread species are also affected by declines. There is a great need for research, especially on the causes of endangerment, but sufficient information is available to implement measures to protect insect diversity.
