Apart from emissions trading, passenger and freight transport is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Austria, and although transport-related greenhouse gas emissions fell by 13.5% in 2020 due to the pandemic, a sustainable reduction in emissions is not yet foreseeable at present. In contrast, national and international climate targets require a rapid and significant trend reversal in GHG emissions from transport.
