Resource title and description in English Microplastics in sewage sludges. Wastewater treatment plants receive microplastics through wastewaters from industry and households (separate sewer system) or additionally through surface-runoff (combined sewer system). During wastewater treatment, particles are efficiently reduced by more than 80 % up to almost complete removal, which means they concentrate in sewage sludge. Some sewage sludge is still applied to soils for fertilization and can constitute a pathway of microplastics into soils.
