Resource title and description in English Climate protection report 2024. Around 72.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria in 2022. This means that greenhouse gas emissions were around 7.9% lower than in 1990. Following the increase in 2021, there was a decrease of 5.8% in 2022 compared to the previous year. This was mainly due to lower steel production, less energy use in buildings due to weather conditions and lower traffic volumes. Overall, the economic sectors that are not subject to European emissions trading emitted around 46.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2022. Emissions were therefore around 1.2 million tonnes below the maximum amount of 47.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent applicable for 2022.
