Resource title and description in English When waste with organic content is disposed in landfills (mass waste landfills), landfill gas is produced during the decomposition of the organic substance. The landfill gas contains the greenhouse gas methane. Since 01.01.2004 (with exceptions until the end of 2008) there has been a landfill ban on untreated biodegradable waste in Austria. Pre-treatment prior to landfill results in a lower organic content in the deposited waste, which led to a decrease in the formation of landfill gas in the following years.
