Waste prevention is one of the top priorities of waste policy in the European Union with economic and environmental benefits. It is becoming increasingly important not only in environmental policy, but also in industrial and raw materials policy. The EU Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) requires Member States to draw up a waste prevention programme. The targets and measures contained therein serve to decouple economic growth from the environmental impacts associated with waste generation.
